Daniil Medvedev claimed his maiden ATP clay court title on Sunday, as he defeated Holger Rune in the finals of the Italian Open. The Russian overpowered his Danish opponent in straight sets, who had earlier gotten the better of Novak Djokovic. This comes as a huge relief to the 2021 US Open champion who has struggled on this surface for a number of years.

Daniil Medvedev rose to number two in the ATP Rankings just prior to the 2023 French Open. The Russian had shown signs of promise at the start of the clay court season when he reached the quarterfinals in Monte Carlo. He was knocked out of the Madrid Masters in just the fourth round, however, things started coming together in Rome.

Daniil Medvedev posted an adorable photo of him celebrating the victory with his newborn daughter and his wife. Fans were quick to respond to his post, as they showered praises on the adorable Medvedev family. Daniil Medvedev has a week to recover before he heads to Paris for the all-important French Open.

Medvedev posted a couple of pictures on his social media accounts, however, the image with his daughter and wife grabbed the attention of the fans. Daniil Medvedev and his wife welcome their daughter, Alisa, into their lives in October last year.

Daniil Medvedev’s performances on clay have vastly improved over the past couple of years. Eventually, it was only a matter of time before he found his foot on the clay courts. Entering as the second seed in Paris, the World No. 2 will back himself for a title-winning run.

With Rafael Nadal withdrawing from the competition, this leaves the draw wide open. World No. 1, Carlos Alcaraz has been in sublime form recently, claiming the Madrid and Barcelona Open titles. However, Daniil Medvedev will be placed in the other half of the draw as compared to his fellow US Open champion, as the two can only face off in the finals.
