The tour has moved to Rome after a rather controversial fortnight in Madrid. The focus is shifting to tennis. The first-round matches are on the way as players gear up to lift the Internazionali BNL d’Italia.
However, it’s not a happy start for everyone. As every tournament would show us there are a few shockers to begin with. Canadian Leylah Fernandez lost in her first-round match at the Italian Open to Aliaksandra Sasnovich. This loss hasn’t gone well with her fans, as they feel it’s high time she won a few rounds in an event.
This is her second straight first-round loss. The previous one came at the Madrid Open last week, where she went down to Mirra Andreeva 6-3 6-4 in straight sets. Another first-round loss to Sasnovich didn’t go well with her fans. She did manage to win a set as the scoreline read 7-6, 4-6, 6-3, but a loss meant that it was curtains for the Canadian in Rome.
However, it wasn’t so much about her loss as it was about how she lost. Fernandez was ahead 3-0 after the third set. She then dropped six straight games and lost the match.
It is difficult for a player when they fail after achieving a few great things in the past. Fernandez, who is famous for the 2021 US Open run to the final, where she eventually lost to Britain’s Emma Raducanu, comes into every tournament with a lot of expectations. She beat many top seeds on her way to the final in New York. Repeated failures at the WTA level are not something fans would expect from her, and they would want her to improve as soon as possible.
