“Unfair to play the tournament when there are no points” Jelena Ostapenko weighs in on the Wimbledon controversy

Jelena Ostapenko won her first-round match at the Roland-Garros 2022 against Italian Lucia Bronzetti in straight sets 6-1, 6-4. The Latvian was in control during the match and showcased her amazing skills.

During the post-match press conference, Ostapenko was asked about her opinions on the whole Wimbledon controversy. She seemed confused with the whole issue at first but then said that it would be unfair to play a whole tournament and receive no points for competing in it.

Wimbledon was ripped off of its points by the ATP after the organizers decided to put a ban on the Russian and Belarussian players for the 2022 tournament. The players have constantly been questioned if they will be going to play the Grass court Grand slam in case there are no points on offer.

Jelena Ostapenko in her post-match interview said, “It has to be fair to everyone. Of course, we players can say our opinions, but I feel like still we are not the ones who are making the decision. There are of course a lot of rumors and talks, but I think maybe they are going to change their mind. I’m not sure about points. But I think a lot of things may happen within the next, like, week or two weeks.”

“But, I mean, if there are no points, I’m not really sure what I’m gonna do. I still want to focus on this tournament, and after, I want to see. Because I feel like it’s a little bit unfair to play the tournament when there are no points and you kind of, you can win the tournament and then you don’t move one spot up in the ranking. So it’s a little bit strange.” She added.
