Andrey Rublev, currently World No 8, had a good run at the ATP Tour winning three singles ATP titles and three doubles titles. He could not participate in the All England Club due to the ban on the Russian and Belarus players. But after being unable to compete at Wimbledon, he entered the Nordea Open in Bastad and entered into the semifinals but eventually lost his semifinal match against Sebastian Baez, another ATP250 event in straight sets. Recently, he lost in the Round of 16 at the Hamburg Open to Francisco Cerundolo in straight sets.

The Russian has a 10-2 record at the ATP500 clay-court tournaments. He plays big forehand shots and as well as has a dangerous and consistent two-handed backhand. Although he is yet to win a Grand Slam, he has 11 ATP titles to his name. His latest win was at the 2022 Serbia Open where he defeated Novak Djokovic.

“I like playing in Washington”: Andrey Rublev on his excitement levels ahead of the Citi Open

Rublev is excited about his return to the North American hard-court swing and loves to play in Washington. Recently, during a TV show appearance, he spoke about being excited to play in front of the US crowd as people throng in large numbers during each match to show their support to the players. The crowd’s presence and constant cheering altogether create a great atmosphere making the game more interesting. He said “I really like playing in Washington. There is always an incredible atmosphere. Many spectators come to matches and stay until late at night. They put an incredible atmosphere and I must admit that I love it.”

He further spoke about how the Americans are excited and supportive when it comes to sports and it has also produced great players in tennis and in other sports like LeBron James and Simone Biles to name a few. He added “The club is top notch in typical American style. Anyway, in terms of sports spectacle, the United States is the best. Not only in tennis, but in all other major sports.“

Rublev has started his practice sessions to get an early start on his tournament preparations as he would be looking to try his luck to win his first Grand Slam title at the US Open 2022. He will be seen next playing at the 2022 Citi Open.
