The conclusion of the 2024 Australian Open brings down the curtain on the first Grand Slam event of the season. The tournament saw defending champ Aryna Sabalenka successfully make the title defense. She defeated China’s Qinwen Zheng in the finals.
The Chinese youngster reached her maiden Major finals but had to settle for the runners-up trophy. Top-seeded Iga Swiatek fell in the third round. The Pole lost to Linda Noskova who capitalized on the opportunity to make her way to the quarter-finals.

Teen sensation Mirra Andreeva once again proved her mettle. She made an emphatic run to the fourth round before losing to former French Open winner Barbora Krejcikova. Elsewhere, Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska turned out to be the dark horse.
She reached the main draw by winning the qualifiers ranked 93rd in the world. On the back of her semis run, she jumped 64 places to become the new World No. 29. She wasn’t the only Ukrainian to impress. 21-year-old Marta Kostyuk also reached the quarter-finals before losing to Coco Gauff.
Jessica Pegula, Ons Jabeur, Emma Raducanu, and Elena Rybakina all suffered second-round defeats. Former champs, Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber, both lost in the opening rounds in what was a failed comeback attempt.
More than 6000 points separate World No. 1 Iga Swiatek and World No. 10 Karolina Muchova
Iga Swiatek started the event as World No. 1 and continues to hold on to the position. She lost only 110 points as a result of her early exit. There was no doubt on Swiatek’s ranking retention given no player could have topped her ranking points tally.

While Aryna Sabalenka was in touching distance, but as she was the defending champion, she was in no position to add more points. The Belarusian was however under threat of losing her World No. 2 spot but Elena Rybakina helped her. The Kazakh’s thrilling loss and Sabalenka’s title defense ruled out that chance.
Qinwen Zheng jumps 8 places to break into the Top 10 for the first time in her career. She is now the new World No. 7 following her runner-up finish. Coco Gauff also achieves her career-high ranking of World No. 3 in singles.
