Serena Williams vs Anett Kontaveit: Preview

Serena Williams

Serena Williams match was in much anticipation since her retirement announcement has been in the headlines. She received a great welcome in a completely filled stadium cheering for the veteran where stakes were very high for her. The six-time US Open champion cruised into the second round of the US Open after registering a comfortable win against Danka Kovinic in straight sets 6-3,6-3. She was fresh from the loss against Emma Raducanu in the first round at the Western & Southern Open but she overcame all odds to register a win and start her final innings on a good note. This win gave her another chance to play at the place where she won her first singles title before she bids her final adieu.

She had managed to win only one out of the four matches since her comeback at the grass court season after a gap of twelve months due to injury. She started off on a winning note in the first round at the Canadian Open but soon failed to dig deep facing elimination in the second round. Even with less practice and lack of form, she pulled a winner in the first round and is hopeful for a great run which will probably be the final Grand Slam of her career.

Anett Kontaveit, the world number two started off with a comfortable win against Romania’s Jacqueline Cristian in straight sets. She has already reached three singles finals on the WTA Tour but only managed to win the title at the St. Petersburg Open defeating Maria Sakkari. She had a disappointing run at the 2022 Wimbledon Championship as well as in the French Open due to her disastrous loss in the early rounds. Her continuation with lack of consistent performance resulted in early losses at the Canadian Open as well as in the Western & Southern Open against Zhang Shuai in the Round of 16 even though she had won the first set.

Serena Williams vs Anett Kontaveit: Prediction

Anett Kontaveit

Serena is one of the favorites going into the tournament since she has been very dominant at the hard-court tournaments. She pulled off some amazing shots in the crunch moments and will be much more confident after her win. But her recent form and less court time will a major concern for the American even though she will be looking to come out as a winner and keep her hopes alive on the final run in her career. On the other hand, Kontaveit is an aggressive player and a big fighter in the competition but has not been very consistent with her performances lately. She would be confident after winning the first round but Kontaveit needs to up her game in order to go into the third round. It will be interesting to see if Williams will be able to overpower the Estonian.

Prediction: Kontaveit to win in three sets.
