Soon-to-be World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka will face the 23rd seed Chinese player, Qinwen Zheng in the quarterfinals of the US Open 2023. Sabalenka defeated Daria Kasatkina in the 4th round in straight sets, while Zheng stunned Ons Jabeur in straight sets to make it to the last 8 of the US Open.

After the match, Sabalenka said, “I think I’m playing great tennis, but there is always things to improve.” She also added that her opponent in the next round, Qinwen Zheng will have nothing to lose in the quarter finals clash between the 2. Zheng too implied that she was happy with her performance against Ons and stated.“”Right now I feel just super happy and excited to play in a big stadium.”

2nd seeded Aryna Sabalenka has not dropped a set coming to the quarter-finals of the US Open 2023 which is quite an impressive feat. She won her previous round against Daria Kasatkina in straight sets, 6-1,6-3. Sabalenka is all set to become the World No.1 after Jelena Ostapenko defeated Iga Swiatek in the 4th round of the tournament. As for the Belarussian, she has dropped just 16 games in her first 4 matches and after Swiatek’s exit, is the biggest favorite to go all the way in New York this week.

Zheng, on the other hand, had a challenging opponent in her 4th round. However, the Chinese shocked Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur in straight sets, 6-2,6-4, to reach her maiden quarter-finals in the US Open. Zheng defeated Nadia Podoroska in the first round before two tough three-set wins against Kaia Kanepi and Lucia Bronzetti in the following rounds. In the Round of 16, she went in as the heavy underdog but shocked the world by outplaying Jabeur in straight sets.

Sabalenka has been looking dominating and confident since the start of the tournament, not dropping in the entire first week. Zheng too had quite a dominating match against Ons Jabeur, defeating her in straight sets, so it will be an exciting clash. However, Sabalenka reached the semi-finals of the US Open last year only to lose to eventual champion Iga Swiatek. She is the most successful female player at Grand Slam level this year having reached at least the semifinals of the previous three majors. The 2023 Australian Open Champion will look to extend her Grand Slam title count and will be expected to defeat the Chinese comfortably.
