World No. 3 Jessica Pegula will square off against World No. 26 Elina Svitolina in the third round of the US Open on Saturday. This will be the fifth meeting between the pair. Their previous encounter led to Pegula winning in three sets.

Pegula knocked out Camila Giorgi in the first round to step up against Patricia Maria Tig in the second. The American broke twice in the set but conceded her lead both times. She broke Tig’s serve for the third time and went on to gain a 5-3 lead. She later served out the game to win the first set. The second set was lopsided in nature, with Pegula losing only one game to win the match 6-3, 6-1.

Meanwhile, Svitolina ousted Anna-Lena Friedsam in straight sets to reach the second round. She then encountered French Open finalist Anastasia Pavlyuchuenkova. Both were on equal footing, and it was difficult to point out the champion between the two.

Svitolina served at 6-5 but could not convert the points, and therefore the set went into a tiebreaker. She finally got broken on Pavlyuchenkova’s third try to break serve and eventually lost the set. The Ukrainian then went forward to nab the second set and rushed to gain a 4-0 lead in the deciding set. Pavlyuchenkova tried, but to no avail, as Svitolina won the match 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

The third seed and the 26th seed have met each other four times in previous encounters. Pegula leads their head-to-head 3-1. The Americans won their last encounter at the Citi Open in three sets.

Svitolina has a good backhand but lacks in the forehand area. Her second serve is also a bit weak, which gives the opponent an advantage against her. Pegula has better gameplay in comparison to her. Like the previous times, she is the one expected to win in this encounter.
