World No.3 and one of the favorites for the US Open title Jessica Pegula got the better of the 26th seeded Elina Svitolina to advance to the fourth round of her home Grand Slam event. The No.1 ranked American defeated the Ukrainian 6-4,4-6,6-2 to set up an all-American clash in the fourth round. With the win, Pegula has improved her head-to-head against Svitolina to 4-1. Pegula is playing for her first Grand Slam title.

On the other hand, the 17th seed Madison keys had a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 comeback winner over No.14 Liudmila Samsonova. The American No.3’s highest Grand Slam finish came at the 2017 US Open where she ended up as the runner-up. Keys was defeated by her American counterpart Sloane Stephens in straight sets for the US Open title.

The American duo have played just once, with Pegula besting the 2017 US Open runner-up in straight sets in a tournament in San Diego last September.

Jessica Pegula hasn’t been able to get past the Quarter-finals stage at Grand Slam events. If Pegula gets the better of Keys, she will equal her best performance at the US Open. She was defeated by the eventual champion Iga Swiatek in the Quarter-finals of last year’s US Open.

Talking about the upcoming clash in an on-court interview after her third-round win, Pegula said, “We’ve been in the same section every single tournament the last 3 or 4 tournaments. We were like ‘I think the world just wants us to play’ so I’m glad we get to put on a show for you guys.. it’s gonna be really tough.”

The 3rd seed heads into the US Open on the back of a successful North American hard-court swing. She won her 2nd WTA 1000 title at the National Bank Open, defeating the World No.1 in the semi-final.

Keys rallied after losing the first set to wrap up her own victory and told reporters that her match against Pegula will “be a really difficult match no matter who wins,” according to the WTA.

Madison Keys will definitely be a decent challenge for the in-form Pegula. The 17th seed possesses a big serve and hits powerful forehands and backhands landing near the baseline. According to Keys, Pegula is more of a flat hitter of the ball than she is. If Pegula is to avoid any scare in the all-American battle she’d have to bring her ‘A’ return game. The American No. 1 heads into the game as a heavy favorite.
