The two finalists for the Men’s Singles event at the 2023 US Open have been decided and it is none other than the 23-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic and 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev. The two players eased past their opponents in the semifinals to set up an ultimate showdown which will be a 2021 US Open final rematch. While Djokovic beat American teen sensation Ben Shelton in three straight sets 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (4), Medvedev avenged his semifinals defeat from 2023 Wimbledon against Carlos Alcaraz, beating the Spaniard 7-6 (3), 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

Third-seed Daniil Medvedev has played some really good tennis at the 2023 US Open so far. However, it was not the same for the Russian throughout the year. He did not start well as Medvedev bowed out of the Australian Open after losing in the third round. The 27-year-old bounced back nicely to win three titles on the trot. He also won the Miami Open and the Italian Open.

However, At the French Open, Medvedev’s performance was even worse than what he did in Australia. Daniil Medvedev was knocked out after losing in the first round. Nevertheless, the Russian improved and made it to the semifinals at Wimbledon only to go down against Alcaraz. Now, at the US Open, he has been pitted against Djokovic in his quest to lift his first Grand Slam title of the year.

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic has been nothing short of phenomenal this year. After missing out on a few tournaments including the US Open in 2022, the Serbian made a befitting comeback. Djokovic won the title in Australia and in France. He made it to the finals at Wimbledon and was close to scripting history before Carlos Alcaraz broke his rhythm. But the 36-year-old did not let that defeat against Alcaraz affect him much.

Djokovic easily cruised into the semifinals at the Flushing Meadows wherein he had to take on Ben Shelton. Now, having made it to the finals in all four Grand Slams this year, Djokovic will eye nothing less than a win. But he has Medvedev in front of him whom he lost in 2021. Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev have faced each other a total of 14 times so far. The Serbian leads the head-to-head record 9-5 but there is a catch. Novak Djokovic has lost only one match on hard court this year and it won’t be hard to guess against whom. Yes, Daniil Medvedev thumped Djokovic when the two met on the hard court last time, in Dubai. It was a win in straight sets for the Russian.

However, Novak Djokovic has toppled Daniil Medvedev on eight occasions out of twelve when they have met each other on hard courts. Now, as the two gear up to face each other on Sunday, it will be interesting to see who prevails and who succumbs to the pressure.
