The World No.1 Novak Djokovic will play against World No. 9 Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals of the 2023 US Open on Tuesday. Djokovic began his pursuit for a 24th Major title with victories over Alexandre Muller, Bernabe Zapata Miralles, and Laslo Djere. He competed against qualifier Borna Gojo for a position in the last eight. Fritz defeated Steve Johnson, Juan Pablo Varillas, and Jacub Mensik to advance to the fourth round, where he faced qualifier Dominic Stricker.

Djokovic breezed through the first set, breaking Gojo’s serve twice to win. The Serb rallied from a break down to win the second set, which was more competitive. Djokovic took the key break in the eighth game of the third set, leading 4-3. Though he blew a match point on Gojo’s serve at 5-3, he finished out the match in the next game to win 6-2, 7-5, 6-4.

In Fritz’s match with Dominic Stricker, the opening set was a close one, with the American coming out on top in the tie-break. Fritz won the next two sets with a single break of service in each, finishing with a 7-6 (2), 6-4, 6-4 victory. He has now reached the final eight for the first time in his career and only the second time at a Major.

Djokovic leads Fritz 7-0 in the head-to-head. He won their previous encounter at the 2023 Western & Southern Open in straight sets.

Both performed well and only dropped their serve once in the previous round. Djokovic is the fan favorite to win this match owing to his flawless record against Fritz. Aside from their clash at the Australian Open in 2021, the Serb has won all of their other meetings in straight sets. Even their meeting in Melbourne went to five sets because of the former World No. 1’s injury. It is unlikely that Fritz would be able to step up to Djokovic at a match that will have the highest stakes. Therefore, Djokovic will be the one to clinch a victory here
