Fritz ousted Steve Johnson and Juan Pablo Varillas to reach the third round. He then took on Czech player Jakub Mensik on his birthday. The American started off great by dishing out a breadstick in the first set. Mensik improved in the second set but he was clearly no match for Fritz who claimed another set by only dropping two games. He then completely demolished Mensik by serving him a bagel to win the match 6-1,6-2,6-0.
Stricker has hustled his way into the big leagues from the qualifiers. He defeated Alexei Popyrinin in four sets and then caused a huge upset by knocking off World No. 7 Stefanos Tsitsipas in a thrilling five-setter. The Swiss faced Benjamin Bonzi in the third round.
While the Frenchman took the opening set, Stricker rallied by taking the second set to square the score. The latter then clinched the third set by winning the tie-break.
Bonzi responded by winning the fourth set and forcing the match to a tiebreaker. Stricker saved a couple of break opportunities in the fifth set, after which he played more freely. The 21-year-old defeated Bonzi in straight sets, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-2.
