US Open commentators come under fire for misidentifying Dionne Warwick for Gladys Knight during Serena Williams’ 2nd round match
Gladys Knight and Dionne Warwick
The commentary panel during the 2022 US Open‘s Day-3 covering the second round clash between former World No. 1 Serena Williams and 2nd seeded Anett Kontaveit came under fire after wrongly identifying two music legends in attendance. The incident occurred early in the first set, with Serena having two break points in the 3rd game of the first set.
The broadcast was being covered by the well-experienced Chanda Rubin and Mary Carillo who were on the world feed and made the blunder. With the tournament being the farewell tournament of Serena, who has decided to hang up her racket at the end of the Grand Slam, a lot of celebrities are making their trip to Flushing Meadows to catch the 23-time major winner for the one last time before she bids goodbye to the tournament for the good.
Chanda Rubin explains her mistake at the US Open
The incident involved legendary singers Gladys Knight and Dionne Warwick who were both seated in the Arthur Ashe stadium to watch Serena‘s battle with Kontaveit. With the match just having started, the commentary panel was looking into the crowd to spot the celebrities in attendance when Mary wrongly identified Warwick as Knight to which Rubin agreed.
The two came under heavy fire on social media where Rubin finally explained what went wrong. “Too bad I was initially looking at the court (where Auntie Gladys was in the stands) and not our program monitor that showed Ms. Dionne… mistake was immediately corrected,” tweeted Rubin later.
Luckily for Rubin and Carillo, the icons of the music industry did not react to the accident, the social media did not let go of the two easily.
