French coach Patrick Mouratoglou has disclosed that Daniil Medvedev was left ’empty’ after his heartbreaking final at the US Open against Novak Djokovic. Mouratoglou also revealed that the Russian was not in a state to pick up the racket once again, claiming that he needed to completely rest.
Daniil Medvedev had made a last-minute withdrawal from the Ultimate Tennis Showdown(UTS) claiming that the two weeks at the US Open had taken a heavy toll on his body. He said that he was physically not in the best condition to be playing. However, UTS founder Patrick Mouratoglou has a different story to tell. “I received a call from Medvedev telling me that he was really sorry, but that he didn’t feel able to play, “ said the Frenchman.
According to Mouratoglou, the Russian was not in a mental state to pick up the racket anytime soon. The Frenchman revealed that Medvedev needed to put aside his racket completely and rest both body and mind. “He was supposed to play, but he feels completely empty, and he can’t even think about having a racket in his hand,” he inferred from the phone call between the two.
However, Grigor Dimitrov came in clutch to take Medvedev’s empty spot. Despite his last-minute entry into the event, Dimitrov managed to make it to the final match. He fought against Andrey Rublev. However, he lost the match. Nevertheless, it was quite a performance by the Bulgarian in spite of a late entry.
Patrick Mouratoglou talks about the difference in atmospheres at Frankfurt and Los Angeles
Mouratoglou admitted that he was quite worried that the audience would be much quieter in Frankfurt than in Los Angeles. He was afraid that this would damage the atmosphere at the event.

However, the Frenchman also proved that he was quite wrong in his assumption. “Then here, the people told us, ‘No chance you will fill the stadium in Frankfurt, and you will see that the German public is very calm, they are not going to be noisy’. I think its the opposite,” said Mouratoglou.
All-in-all, the French coach was quite satisfied with the supportive nature of the audience. He also said that the event saw a full house on Saturday and Sunday.
