Czech world No.9 Marketa Vondrousova withdraws from the doubles, to focus on her singles event. Her video went viral on X (formerly Twitter) where the Czech is seen crying in the dressing room following the decision to quit the doubles event. In the singles, current Wimbledon champion Vondrousova has moved to the quarter-final in singles where she is expected to meet American World No.17 Madison Keys.

In the fourth round, Vondrousova defeated unseeded American Peyton Stearns, 6-7(3-7), 6-3, 6-2. Due to this workload, she decided to withdraw from the doubles event which also meant that her doubles partner Barbora Strycova would not get a farewell match. The former Doubles World No.1 player and Vondrousova’s compatriot had already announced that the US Open 2023 will be her final tournament.

Their withdrawal from the doubles event means that Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe will go through to the fourth round without sweating on the ground. The tennis fans have been giving Vondrousova enough empathy as it’s understandable how much workload it is to play both singles and doubles in the same tournament. Jessica Pegula, who was one of the favorites to win the US Open also lost to compatriot Madison Keys, most probably due to playing mixed doubles and women’s doubles.c

“I’m very happy. I actually didn’t expect it. After Wimbledon, it was a lot of pressure. I’m feeling good. I’m just trying to enjoy the game. I feel like every match is very tough. We’ll see what happens next,” said Vondrousova after reaching the US Open quarterfinal.

The Czech World No.9 Marketa Vondrousova is having one hell of a season as she continues her top form in the Grand Slams. After the emphatic win at the Wimbledon this year, she was expected to make a deep run in the US Open as well. Her current form underlines that and the odds are right on the money for her in the coming round as well.

If things go as planned, Vondrousova will be facing the recently turned World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka (official ranking will be updated next week) in the semi-finals of the US Open. With Iga Swiatek out in the other half of the draw, it is not sure who will be reaching the final stage now. But with the way it looks, Coco Gauff is definitely a bet for many of the tennis and American fans.

Whoever is on the other end of the court, Vondrousova is proving to be lethal in the clutch moments. She has turned out to be a big game player recently and will no longer be a dark horse in any of the tournaments.
