Novak Djokovic was a surprise guest in the Martin Carpena Arena in Malaga where the 2022 Davis Cup Finals were being played. The Serb graced the event only for the title decider match between Canada and Australia where the Canadians went on to win the title, their first-ever in the tournament’s history.

Djokovic and Vasek Pospisil are the co-founders of the Professional Tennis Player’s Association (PTPA) and both of them now have a Davis Cup title to their name. Djokovic was instrumental in Serbia’s win in 2010 and brought them close in 2013 as well but they finished runner-up missing out on the second chance.

Pospisil’s experience in a rather young side with the likes of Felix Auger-Aliassime, Denis Shapovalov, Alexis Galarneau, and Gabriel Diallo was of big importance. Aliassime and Shapovalov’s win in their singles match in the finals was enough for Canada to take a 2-0 lead and did not require Pospisil’s service in the finals but none can deny he was crucial in all the doubles matches Canada contested.

With Djokovic coming in to see the finals, Pospisil was quite happy and expressed his gratitude towards the Serb who is currently enjoying his off-season after a rollercoaster season.

“Yes, I spoke with him. He texted me to tell me he was coming. Then he texted me to tell me he was a little late and wouldn’t be seeing me until the game. In the end, I didn’t need to play. It was really cool of him to be there.

“He came and congratulated us all afterwards, which is really cool. He’s also someone who knows what it’s like to win the Davis Cup. It was cool to see him here,” said Pospisil in comments reported by WeloveTennis.

It was a great season for the Canadians in team competition as the men’s side won both the ATP Cup and the Davis Cup titles. While Pospisil did not play at the ATP Cup, Djokovic‘s vaccination stance kept him out of the competition that was held in Australia this year in what was the third and final edition of the tournament.

The PTPA co-founders will once again be absent from team events when the 2023 United Cup kicks-off on 29th December in Australia commencing the 2023 season on both ATP and WTA Tour at the mixed-gender event. Both Serbia and Canada fail to make the cut in the 18-teams international event.
