Legendary tennis player Venus Williams has announced through a tweet on her X account that she will be taking part in the 2024 Indian Wells. The tournament has awarded wild card entries to Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki in an attempt to redeem the careers of both veteran players.
It is a particularly massive moment for Venus Williams because she had said in one of her interviews a couple of weeks ago that participating in either the Indian Wells or the Miami Open was one of her biggest immediate targets.
Can’t wait to be back at #TennisParadise.Venus tweeted, sharing the post where Indian Wells announced her return to the tournament.
Venus Williams last appeared in the 2023 US Open, where she suffered a heartbreaking first-round exit against Greet Minnen following a humbling defeat. She decided to take a long break after that and the 43-year-old is finally set to make her return now.
The veteran player last appeared at the Indian Wells back in 2019 when she reached the quarterfinals, where she lost to Angelique Kerber. Kerber went on to proceed to the final, but lost to Bianca Andreescu.
Caroline Wozniacki, on the other hand, is in much better form. She made a comeback to tennis last year at the US Open after a three-year break following the birth of her three children. She reached Round 4 of the US Open, and more recently, she reached the second round of the Australian Open.
Serena Williams motivated Venus Williams to not give up
Venus Williams is 43 years old and has already lived past the usual retirement age for tennis players by a good margin. Thus, after losing the first round of the 2023 US Open in a humbling manner against a player who played the qualifier, she was on the verge of giving up the sport once and for all. However, it was her sister, Serena Williams, who motivated her to keep on playing.
My little sister, Serena, told me I'm not allowed to quit, and of course, I would never quit. But it's the mandate. She said no, so I will be back on the court. It's a long time. ... It's a lot of years not to play at home. So that's of course one of my big goals on the horizon, is to be there, prepare to do that.Venus Williams said. (H/T: Tennis.com)
After participating in the Indian Wells, Serena will also like to take part in the Miami Open where she has a phenomenal record. She won the 1998, 1999, and 2001 Miami Opens.
