Speaking to the WTA in 2017, Venus Williams remarked, “I have a lot to give, a lot of great tennis left in me.” It’s been 6 years since then and seven Grand Slam singles titles winner is still going as strong as ever. Williams, 43 years old now, has battled an autoimmune disease and shows no signs of giving up the sport that she loves.
She is now set to compete in a record-extending 24th US Open after being handed a wildcard for this year’s final Grand Slam event. With this appearance, Williams extends her record of 23 appearances at the US Open over the likes of tennis legends Jimmy Connors, Martina Navratilova, and her sister Serena Williams. Venus made her US Open debut back in 1997, reaching the final.
Venus Williams achieved her first top-20 victory in four years by defeating 16th seed Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets at the Cincinnati Masters. Following her triumphant performance, Venus revealed that she received a congratulatory text from her sister Serena Williams, acknowledging her remarkable win.
Caroline Wozniacki was another one among the US Open wild-card entrants. The former world number one will make her first Grand Slam appearance since retiring after the 2020 Australian Open. Since then the Dane has given birth to two kids and made a comeback to tennis earlier this month.

Venus Williams misses out on her first back-to-back win after 4 years
The 7-time Grand Slam singles titles winner Venus Williams lost 1-6,6-2,6-1 to world number 24 Zheng Qinwen. Williams lost 11 games in a row after leading 2-0 in the second set and having won the first set. As a result, Williams was unable to win back-to-back WTA Tour matches for the first time since 2019.
Zheng was full of praise for Williams after the game. Talking about the match, Zheng said, “That was super special. Especially at the beginning. Always super respect to Venus Williams. I was watching her on tv when I was just a little kid. That was a special feeling to play against her today.” Zheng is scheduled to play the top seed Iga Swiatek in the Round of 16 next.
Meanwhile, Williams will continue her preparations for a record-extending appearance at the US Open. Venus won back-to-back US Open titles in 2000 and 2001. Venus has featured in six tournaments this year and would hope that the upcoming US Open turns out to be the best slot. Nonetheless, Venus Williams won’t be short of crowd support at her home Grand Slam.
