In a recent interview, tennis legend Venus Williams hinted that she has no plans of retiring anytime soon and may be the first player to continue playing until the age of 50. Williams, known for her powerful game and remarkable career, humorously mentioned the attractive insurance benefits offered on the WTA tour as a motivation to stay in the game.

It’s never been done before, so if there was one to try it, it would be me. There are really great insurance benefits on tour. I need those, so I figure I may as well keep going!,” said the American jokingly.

Known for her advocacy of equal prize money for both male and female players, Williams reminisced about the moment when she and Billie Jean King received the news of their successful fight for equal pay at Wimbledon in 2007. She described it as the best moment of her career.

It was fantastic that the All England Club understood that challenge and rose to that occasion. That moment for me was incredible and still the best moment of my career,” recalled Williams.

Despite battling hamstring issues that have limited her competitive appearances this year, Williams showed her prowess with a notable victory over Camila Giorgi at Birmingham, her first win against a top-50 player in four years. This accomplishment suggests that she remains a formidable opponent on the court.

Williams has faced a challenging period with limited match play, having participated in only five matches over the past six months. Her journey began in January when she split two matches in Auckland, New Zealand. Unfortunately, a hamstring injury sidelined her for over half a year.

At the Auckland Open in January, Williams was granted a wildcard entry into the main draw and commenced her 30th year on the WTA Tour with a convincing straight-sets win against fellow American Katie Volynets in the first round. Following that, she received a wildcard for the Rosmalen Grass Court Championships but faced an early exit, losing in the first round to 17-year-old Céline Naef.

Returning to the grass court season, Williams participated in the S’Hertogenbosch and Birmingham tournaments. Although she lost two out of three matches in those events, her victory over Camila Giorgi in Birmingham was a remarkable highlight.

The victory against Giorgi marks a significant milestone for the 43-year-old tennis veteran, showcasing her unwavering spirit. Despite the challenges she has faced, Williams remains a respected figure in the tennis world, inspiring both fans and fellow athletes with her perseverance and commitment to the sport. She is now set to face Elina Svitolina, a fellow wild card entry in the first round of Wimbledon 2023.
