Venus Williams and Diana Shnaider faced each other in the first round (round of 128) of the 2024 Miami Open. A very unexpected situation arose in the second set when a black and white cat suddenly entered the court, and the chair umpire asked for the point to be replayed. Needless to say, it was not a scene that fans can usually hope to see in a tennis match.
Let, replay the point. There is a cat crossing the court. The tennis umpire said out loud
As expected, the call led to several giggles, both in the stands and on social media. It’s not something that the chair umpire ever thought that he would have to say in a match.
Talking about the match, Diana Shnaider dominated Venus Williams from the very beginning, which was how many had expected the match to go. She defeated the American 6-3, 6-3, in straight sets. With this, Venus Williams also continues her run of losing first-round matches in tournaments.
She made her comeback to the court at the 2024 Indian Wells. It was her first tournament after her appearance in the 2023 US Open, where she lost to Greet Minnen 1-6, 1-6 in the first round. Venus faced Japan’s Nao Hibino in the first round of Indian Wells. However, despite winning the first set, she failed to keep up the momentum and ultimately lost the match in three sets. Her fate in the Miami Open ended up being the same.
What next for Venus Williams?
Venus Williams is quite literally in the twilight of her career. She is 43 years old currently and is only continuing to play tennis due to her love for the sport. However, many fans are of the opinion that the legend should now hang her boots, as her results have consistently been very bad. In fact, since 2022, Venus Williams has lost 13 matches and won 3, for a win percentage of 19%.
Venus Williams is hands down a legend in the sport. She has won 7 Grand Slam singles titles and 14 Grand Slam doubles titles in the span of her career, which makes her one of the most decorated women’s tennis players ever. However, she is evidently not in touch anymore and this might be the time to bid farewell to the game. It is unsure as to which tournament she will take part in next.
