American legend Venus Williams comes out of her retirement to team up with Tunisian star Ons Jabeur for an upcoming event in the latter’s hometown. For the uninitiated, the former World No.1 had said she retired from doubles when her sister and fellow legend Serena Williams retired but now she will play singles and doubles both in Tunisia via a wildcard.

Venus last played in her home Grand Slam this year but was on the losing side in the first round itself. She had previously played at Wimbledon as well, but there also the result was the same- lost in the opening round. Venus has never gone past the third round in Grand Slam singles after 2017, the year in which she made two Grand Slam finals.

Venus’ comeback was not at all expected by the fans since the 43-year-old had previously stated that she wouldn’t play doubles since her sister Serena’s retirement. But what awaits now will be huge for Tunisian tennis in general, with the comeback of Venus Williams.

The Williams sisters’ rivalry

The American former World No 1 is considered to be one of the all-time greats of the game. Venus has won 7 Major titles in her singles career. 5 of the triumphs were at Wimbledon and 2 were at the US Open. She reached the French Open final once and the Australian Open final twice. The sisters turned back the clock in the 2017 Australian Open final when they both faced off in a Grand Slam final for the first time after Venus’ triumph in Wimbledon in 2008. They both have played against each other 31 times and Serena leads the head-to-head 19-12.

Serena also leads the head-to-head in Slam matches and Slam finals: 11-5 and 7-2, respectively. The duo has played 4 Major finals consecutively from the 2002 French Open to the 2003 Australian Open and Serena won all 4.

The Williams sisters have won 22 titles when playing doubles together. This includes 14 Majors and 3 Olympic gold medals. Venus Williams is the eldest of the Williams sisters. She made her debut in 1994 at 14 and hasn’t retired yet from the circuit aged 42.
