Victoria Azarenka has chimed in on the ongoing no-handshake debate involving Ukrainian, Russian, and Belarussian players. Azarenka said at the Canadian Open, emphasizing her tolerance for athletes’ personal decisions while also emphasizing her conviction that the no-handshake practice is not a typical protocol in the sport.

The no-handshake policy has been a recurring theme, due to the ongoing war between the countries. Ukrainian players have elected not to shake hands with their Russian and Belarussian opponents after matches, sparking various arguments. The recent controversy surrounded Azarenka and Ukrainian player Elina Svitolina when the former respected Svitolina’s decision and did not approach her to shake hands after the match.

“I respect the decision of another person, but I do not think this is standard procedure in the sport,” Azarenka asserted forcefully. She mentioned how she is so tired of constantly talking about this topic. “I feel that the message is very clear, that it is a personal choice of the Ukrainian athletes. It is not a common practice. It is not something that I would do, but I am not in a position to judge,” she clarified.

Continuing to address the problem, Azarenka underlined her commitment to treating her teammates with respect, regardless of their actions. “And, as I’ve said, I don’t know how many times, I will respect and accept the decision of another player,” she stated emphatically.
