The event was marred by the ‘handshake controversy’ that took place after the match. Svitolina, hailing from Ukraine had announced previously that she will not shake hands with any Russian or Belarussian player considering the ongoing war. Azarenka, who is Belarussian respected her decision and did not go ahead to shake hands with her. But the Wimbledon crowd took her action out of context and booed Azarenka for disrespecting the Ukrainian.
