“You just can’t tell where it’s going,” Victoria Azarenka showers huge praise on Nick Kyrgios’s serve confessing of wanting it herself
The Australian Open semifinalist revealed she would love to have Kyrgios' ability on the serve
Victoria Azarenka and Nick Kyrgios
Victoria Azarenka is full of praise for Nick Kyrgios’s serve and says it is one of the best. The 2023 Australian Open semifinalist stated that she would love to add the 27-year-old’s serve to her armory. She was replying to an interview question on what she would like to add to her game.
Azarenka answered the question, saying, “I would honestly say Nick Kyrgios’ serve is very good. His serve is, I think, one of the best serves I’ve ever seen. You just can’t tell where it’s going. The second serve is really good.” The Belarusian is clearly a fan of one of the best aspects of Kyrgios’ game. She believes adding it to her game would elevate her to another level.
Azarenka herself is a good server. She has a 76.1% win rate in her service game this year, showing that her serves are still reliable and big point winners for her. She also has 52 aces already. Still, in the second month of the year, it is already getting close to her tally of 81 aces in 2022. As the statistics prove, Azarenka has improved her service this year.
The improvement in her game has helped her make a grand return to the big stages in 2023. Azarenka, a former World No.1, surprised everyone by making it to the semifinals of the 2023 Australian Open. The 33-year-old had yet to go past the fourth round in three years before that. Her comeback to this late stage of a Grand Slam tournament was the feel-good story of the tournament Down Under.
Victoria Azarenka’s brilliant run at the 2023 Australian Open
Azarenka started the Australian Open out of the title contenders’ conversation. She entered the tournament as 24th seed and wasn’t expected to go too far in line with her performances in recent Grand Slam tournaments. She started her campaign against American Sofia Kenin, a match she was expected to win.
Azarenka delivered on expectations and beat Kenin in straight sets. She won another winnable tie against Nadia Podoroska in the next round. Her third-round win, however, was a surprise and made people notice her performances. She beat 10th seed Madison Keys in a comeback three-set victory. She followed it with another win in the fourth round over Chinese player Lin Zhu.
Her next challenge was title contender Jessica Pegula, who was World No.3. Azarenka surprised the world by beating her practice partner in straight sets to progress to the semifinals. She didn’t slow down at that stage too. She pushed eventual finalist Elena Rybakina all the way in the first set, losing in the tiebreak. However, it was not to be for Azarenka as she lost the game. But she was back where she belonged, at the very top.
