The Citi Open round of 16 match between World No. 9 Taylor Fritz and former World No. 1 Andy Murray is set to be a special one. As the top seed this year, Fritz faces a tough challenge from Murray, who made the finals here way back in 2006. Both players possess powerful games and have proven their mettle on American hardcourts.

Taylor Fritz has seen good form so far in this tournament. After receiving a bye in the first round, he faced American rising star Zachary Svajda in the second round. The World No. 9 dispatched Svajda in straight sets with the final scoreline 6-3, 6-3.

Murray who faced a disappointing loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round at Wimbledon a month back, will aim to find some consolation with a strong showing in this tournament. He received a bye too in the first round. He then defeated young American Brandon Nakashima in the second round in two tight sets.

The duo have met once in their career so far, at the 2022 Canadian Masters. Fritz won the match rather comfortably in straight sets.

Both players possess powerful groundstrokes capable of demolishing any player on a good day. While Murray is renowned for his defensive game, Fritz and his piercing shots make up for a really effective attacking game. This stark contrast in their game styles in spite of similar strengths puts a layer of intrigue over this match-up.

While many may argue that Murray’s best days are behind him, he has time and again proved that he is never too far from causing a big upset against a highly-ranked player. He may not be at his physical peak but his years of experience playing against top-notch competition make up for this handicap.

Fritz on the other hand is in a successful phase of his career. Fresh off an ATP 250 title at the Atlanta Open, Fritz aiming to make it two in a row with an ATP 500 title here at Washington. Being 25 and in the physical prime of his career, Fritz has an advantage over Murray by virtue of his superior court coverage. He will aim to make Murray cover as much ground as possible by mixing his game with frequent drop shots and well-placed groundstrokes.

While a shocking upset is not off the table, Fritz is still the favorite to win going into this match.
