World No. 37 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and World No. 68 Jiri Vesely played a thriller on Court 17 on Day 3 of the ongoing 2022 Wimbledon Championships. After 3 hours and 52 minutes, Vesely was declared the winner taking home a 6-3, 5-7, 6-7(7), 6-3, 7-6(7) in controversial circumstances. It was a back-and-forth match throughout and it could have gone further but the conclusion was a killjoy.

The fifth was particularly very balanced as neither of the players allowed the other one to take a lead and force a tiebreaker. Fokina had a match point for himself but failed to capitalise on it and then saw himself go out in the most strange manner. The win takes Jiri into the third round of the Grand Slam for the fifth time in his career while Fokina gets a lot of time to look back and analyse where he lost the plot in the match that was certainly a seesaw battle and could have gone his way as well had he managed to control his temper.

At 8-7 in the fifth set, Fokina was serving and failed to clear the net with a forehand error handing the match point to Vesely as the score became 9-7 in the Czech’s favour. Fokina was upset with his poor shot and in frustration hit the ball outside the court launching it high in the sky. The gesture did not go well with the chair umpire who punished him with a point penalty making Vesely the winner without the point being played.

Fokina tried arguing the chair umpire’s decision but it was of no use as the umpire informed him that due to his earlier actions, he was on warning. While Fokina questioned saying the incidents were different, umpire Ramos did not budge much to the disappointment of the Spaniard. Fokina remained seated in his chair while the entire stadium had gotten empty and after a long delay, Fokina also got up and left.
