Things turned ugly for French veteran Alize Cornet on the Center Court at Wimbledon 2023. Up against defending champ and third-seeded Elena Rybakina, Cornet lost her footing and took a nasty fall. The incident took place in the second set of the match in the 11th game after the two players split the ten games earlier.
The 11th game continued into the 10th deuce between the two players as neither was ready to give up. With 1 hour and 24 minutes on the match clock, Cornet was waiting for Rybakina’s return when she slipped. Her left leg slipped while her body was moving towards the right as she went into a split and immediately gave a loud cry.
Rybakina quickly moved to help her opponent as the match was brought to a halt. All the spectators also tried to get a closer look hoping nothing serious happened to Cornet. The Frenchwoman had earned a name for herself at the Championships last year when she broke Iga Swiatek’s 37-match winning streak during their third-round meeting on Court No. 1.
Alize Cornet calls for an MTO, but not enough to help her fight longer against Elena Rybakina
As the chair umpire and medical team took time to reach, Elena Rybakina tried comforting and checking on the injured Alize Cornet as she broke down into tears. The player was left with no choice but to call for a medical timeout. While the MTO has been a controversial call for decades, its safe to assume no fan thought it was by any means an attempt to break the momentum.
Cornet lay on the floor as she received treatment. As the camera tried capturing her reaction, she was still in pain and tears. After a small break and basic treatment, she returned to the court with heavy strapping on her left leg to not forfeit. Rybakina served out the game to take a 6-5 lead. Cornet however held her fort in the next game to force a second set tiebreaker.
Cornet’s restricted movement made it very clear whose match it was going to be. Rybakina won the tiebreaker 7-2 to move into the third round as she continues her title defense run. As for Cornet, she was given a loud applause on her exit from the court as she struggled to walk.
