World No. 8 Casper Ruud became the first Norwegian man in the Open Era to reach a Grand Slam semi-final after he defeated Holger Rune 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-3 in the quarter-finals of the 2022 French Open. Ruud by reaching the quarter-finals became the first Norwegian to reach the last-8 at the French Open and the 23-year old improved on it with the win over Rune.

Not having gone beyond the fourth round in a Grand Slam singles event, Ruud has achieved his best finish in a major and he is not yet done as he is still in contention for winning the major as he now takes on Marin Cilic in the semi-finals and will look to make it to the finals. With the win against Rune being such a big occasion for him, he displayed great sportsmanship and camaraderie during his on-court interview when he spoke of his compatriot Ulrikke Eikeri who has reached the finals of the Mixed-Doubles at the Roland Garros this year.

“A big day for Norwegian tennis because we have also the female player Ulrikke Eikeri who made the finals of mixed doubles today so she is one step further than me. She will play probably for the biggest title of her life tomorrow so I wish her luck. I will use tomorrow to prepare for the semi-final. These are the matches that you dream about playing and hopefully of course even the final if it is possible. I have to be really focussed and bring my A-game in the semi-final because Marin has been great all week and it will be a tough match,” said Ruud.
