Paula Badosa
Paula Badosa faced another heart-breaking early-round loss at the 2022 San Diego Open losing to Danielle Collins in straight sets. She has had early-round eliminations in most of the hardcourt WTA tournaments of the year with her best performance being at the Silicon Valley Classic where she managed to reach the semi-finals but lost to Daria Kasatkina in straight sets.
Badosa got into a heated altercation with the chair umpire when the Spaniard was trailing 7-6(5),5-3 in her service game and eventually dropped an advantage game giving the lead to the American leaving her frustrated and restless. Unable to hold her nerves on losing a point while trying to hit a return shot, she sat down on the court and threw her racquet in anger. The chair umpire gave a code violation to Badosa as she felt that it was targeted toward a camera person.
She argued with the chair umpire for not empathizing with the situation while clarifying her action saying it was not meant to hurt anyone. She expressed her anger and said “You know, first, before her, there’s the camera. I threw it three meters from there! Yes, yes, three meters, and after this point! I mean, can you empathize a little? Can you empathize a little? No. You didn’t. The first time, the first time in the match! The first time in the match that I threw the racquet. It’s not someone’s direction! It’s over there! Someone’s direction? No. You have no f*cking idea!“

Paula Badosa was looking for a good run at the San Diego Open with moving closer to the qualifications for the year-end championship but even after her loss in the quarterfinals, she still has a chance to qualify if she manages to at least reach the semifinals of the next WTA 1000 event that is the Guadalajara Open.
With her outburst of emotions and her on-court antics, Badosa was highly criticized on social media as some even mocked her for not being unable to accept defeat and did not approve of her actions.
