Andrey Rublev is off to a great start at the Paris Masters after defeating John Isner in the Round of 32. With the win, he inched closer to his qualification chances for the Year-end championship in Turin. He found himself in a funny incident when he disagreed with an interviewer who asked him questions regarding his chances of participation in the ATP Finals.
The World No 8 is considered one of the next-gen stars who has managed to make his way into the history of elites. He has already won four ATP titles of the year and remains in the Top 10 in the overall rankings. His remarkable performance of the year was at the Serbia Open when he defeated the local player and the Serbian legend Novak Djokovic to clinch his 11th ATP title.
The Russian stands with 3,530 points followed by his closest rival Taylor Fritz in the eighth position with 2955 points and Hurbert Hurkacz in the next position with 2,870 points. There are still two places up for grabs for the ATP Finals. During the post-match interview, he went into complete denial of the facts stated before him regarding his chances.
The interviewer asked him that “Taylor and Hubert need to win this tournament to deny you a place in Turin and they both are on your side of the draw.” To which Rublev replied, “No, no, they need to reach the finals“. He then with a big broad smile asked the person to get his facts checked properly despite the interview claiming that he is sure of the calculations from his side. The Gijon Open champion did not budge away and stated that the questioner might totally wrong about his calculations.
Andrey Rublev was disgusted with the decision not to invite the Russian players to the Laver Cup
Rublev missed playing at Wimbledon since the Russian and Belarusian players were banned from playing at Wimbledon due to the Russia-Ukraine war. It was highly a debatable discussion where some felt that the Russian tennis players are being punished for a crime they didn’t even commit.
Despite being a part of Team Europe’s winning team in 2021, he expressed his disappointment over not being invited to this year’s tournament. The 2022 Laver Cup played in the O2 Arena in London didn’t feature any Russian players either. He even spoke that the former World No 1 Daniil Medvedev was invited for sure but the government’s final decision did not allow him to play.
