Andy Murray, the three-time Grand Slam singles champion lost his singles match against Alex de Minaur on Day 1 of the 3-day Laver Cup in London. He played the doubles match with Italian Matteo Berrettini on the third day and lost the match to Felix Auger Aliassime and Jack Sock of Team World in the tie-breaker set 2-6,6-3, 10-8.
Team Europe was leading the first set with the score as 4-2, 30-30 when Jack Sock hit a backhand that went into the middle of the two. Both Murray and Berrettini ran into each other during the return and the Brit hit the ball. But in the process, they went into a collision and the Brit tripped over. Murray while standing up toppled over again on the court injuring his right knee. Team Europe won the point by the Italian’s amazing drop shot, and as soon as the point was over, Berrettini rushed to help his teammate.
Murray got up and was smiling at the funny incident as he went to find a piece of his skin on the floor. He picked it up and took it off the court with blood oozing out from his injury. Murray with a smile said, “My skin is on the court here, it’s nice.” Roger Federer who was present backstage was astounded to see his friend getting injured. As Murray was getting treated for his injury, the Swiss maestro joked with the medic saying “Gentle. This is SIR Andy okay? Be gentle with him.”

Murray and Berrettini made the perfect start to the match and won the first set but slowly lost momentum as things fell out of place for the team in Blue. After the drastic fall that injured Murray, he looked in a little bit of pain and sometimes restricted his movement on the court. The match went into the tie-breaker set where Murray and Berrettini played some amazing level but were outclassed by the opponents of Team World.
The loss in the doubles match which was the first match of the third day of the Laver Cup gave the three crucial points to Team World, and the score ended up as 8-7 with three more matches to go to decide the winner. The doubles pair of Andy Murray and Matteo Berrettini flashed back memories of the 2022 US Open where the Italian had defeated the Brit in the third round.
