WATCH: Andy Murray’s brilliance makes Mats Wilander eat his words after first-round Australian Open victory
The Briton's brilliant performance in the first round of the Australian Open forced the former World No.1 to change his opinions
Mats Wilander and Andy Murray
Andy Murray’s fantastic performance against Matteo Berrettini in the Australian Open forced Mats Wilander to go back on his prediction that the Briton would struggle at the Slam. Wilander released a video addressed directly to Murray, praising him for his performance and admitting that the Scotsman had proved him wrong.
Wilander explained his reasoning for doubting Murray in the beginning. He then revealed that Murray had told him of his desire to get back to the top, but he had doubted that ambition. Wilander said he didn’t think Murray was motivated at the 2020 French Open, which led to his doubts. However, he was now full of praise for the 35-year-old as he mused about his problem-solving skills and level.
Murray addressed his doubters after the match, saying,”The last few years, I’ve questioned myself at times. There’s certainly a lot of people who questioned me and my ability, whether I could still perform at the biggest events and the biggest matches.” But he was satisfied by the match he had just played.
“I felt very proud of myself. That’s not something I generally felt over the years at the end of matches,” he said. The three-time Grand Slam winner has made a stunning comeback from complex hip replacement surgery that threatened his whole career. The Scottish player has taken five years to show the level that took him to the top of the ATP rankings. But he finally seems to be back to close to his best. How far he will go in Melbourne is now finally entirely in Murray’s hands.

Andy Murray’s win over Matteo Berrettini
Murray stunned World No.13 Matteo Berrettini in the first-round of the Australian Open on Tuesday. The former World No.1 was in great form and fitness as he won a thrilling match 6-3,6-3,4-6,6-7(7),7-6(10). He now progresses to the second-round set to be played on Thursday.
Murray started the match brilliantly, winning the first two sets against a struggling Berrettini. But the Italian hit back in the third set to go clear at 3-2. Berrettini then won the third set to make the match enjoyable. There was nothing to separate the two players as they entered the fourth set. But again, the World No.13 took the set on his third set point. The final set was the best, with both players showing their determination to win.
Berrettini made some unforced errors in the tiebreak as Murray fought back to level things at 6-6. He then rode his luck and a net cord winner closed out the win. Murray was ecstatic with the success, which validated his long hours to return to this level.
