The Spanish youngster Carlos Alcaraz won the 2022 Barcelona Open and became the youngest player to enter the top 10 after Rafael Nadal. He faced his friend Pablo Carreno Busta in the finals and won the match 6-3, 6-2. Nadal congratulated both the players which meant a lot to young Carlos and he said that in an interview.
Carlos was seen celebrating in traditional style. He jumped in the pool after winning the finals with all of the ball kids. His idol Rafael Nadal also won the Barcelona Open when he was 18 and celebrated in the same way. It is a tradition at the Barcelona Open that the winner jumps into the pool with ball kids and Alcaraz made sure he followed the tradition as well.
Alcaraz not only made the big dive, but he also ensured his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero also dipped in the pool on a celebratory night in Spain as the 18-year old won his first ATP title on his home soil and was one of the title contenders after his heroics in Rio and Miami earlier in the season.
Carlos Alcaraz’s run to the Barcelona Open title
Back on Sunday Carlos played his semi-finals and finals on consecutive days and still won both matches. The title was not easy as he had to play very tough opponents and players with whom he practices on a regular basis. He faced Kwon Soon-woo in his first match and he won with a score of 1-6,6-2,2-6. In his second match, he had to face Jaume Munar who is also from Spain but won quite comfortably against him.
His next opponent was the last year’s runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas. This was a tough match as Tsitsipas was predicted to win the match. However, even when the odds were against Carlos he managed to win against Stefano who is very experienced. In the semis, Alcaraz faced the Australian Alex de Minaur.
This was his toughest match in the tournament according to viewers. He came back from a set down to win a match against a strong opponent like Alex. The score was 6-7,7-6,6-4. this was also the longest match played by Carlos in the Barcelona Open. Then In the finals, he faced Pablo Carenno Busto another Spanish and a friend of Carlos and won the Barcelona Open with a score of 6-3,6-2. This victory helped him reach the position of new number 9 pushing British No. 1 Cameron Norrie out of the top 10.
