Climate activist sets himself on fire during the 2022 Laver Cup
The 2022 Laver Cup got to a good start with Casper Ruud from Team Europe and Jack Sock from Team World playing a brilliant nail-biter. Ruud eventually won the match to keep Team Europe’s streak of winning the first match intact. The 2nd match however had a shocking incident on the court.
Team Europe’s Stefanos Tsitsipas and team World’s Diego Schwartzman were playing the match when during a break, a climate activist made his way to the court and set himself on fire. The activist had worn a white t-shirt with the text ”End UK private jets.’ He put his arm on fire before the security took him away.
With carbon emissions a big challenge for climate conservation, private jet owners have been quite often asked to look at other alternatives to travel. With Roger Federer retiring at the end of this year’s Laver Cup, the occasion was quite big with the entire globe’s eyes on the tournament.

Tennis fans on social media were shocked to see a man set himself on fire in the middle of one of the biggest tournaments of the year. They also questioned the security and deemed the O2 arena unsafe for the tennis players who were on the court. Many also questioned the protestor’s stupidity for spoiling everyone’s mood.
