WATCH: Danielle Collins celebrates prematurely as she forgets new tiebreaker rules at the 2023 Australian Open
The American celebrated on winning the seventh point of the tiebreak, forgetting the new ten point rule for the final set
Danielle Collins celebrates too early
Danielle Collins had an embarrassing moment during her second-round clash with Karolina Muchova at the 2023 Australian Open. World No.11 celebrated what she thought was the winning point in the match’s third set, only to be reminded that final set tiebreaks finish at ten points according to new rules.
Collins won the seventh point in the tiebreak of the third set against Muchova to take a 7-3 lead. Much to the crowd’s amusement, she threw her racket to the ground and looked up in celebration. The crowd cheered her on, assuming she was celebrating the point. But when the chair umpire reminded her that the tiebreak would go on to ten points, the spectators were left in splits. A smiling and embarrassed Collins walked back to the baseline to face the next point.
Collins reacted to her mistake after rounding out a 6-7(1),6-2,7-6(10) win. “I was a little embarrassed. Never had to play a tie-break in the third set at a Grand Slam so I thought the match was over. Just told myself at least you didn’t face plant on the floor, I was trying to keep things in perspective.I am not good with the score, sometimes I forget. I need to work on that a bit!”
The victory took Danielle Collins to the third round of the Australian Open. She will face World No.22 Elena Rybakina in the biggest clash of the round. Collins will be looking for revenge against an opponent she recently lost to. Rybakina defeated her in the Adelaide International 1 first round. Collins will fancy her chances in this early stage of a Grand Slam tournament, a completely different context.
Danielle Collins’ 2022 season
Collins had a great 2022 season. The 29-year-old reached her first Grand Slam final and became American No.1. She started the year in fantastic form. She defeated Iga Swiatek and Alize Cornet on the way to the 2022 Australian Open final.
There she lost to then World No.1 Ashleigh Barty despite being 5-1 up in the second set. She earned Swiatek’s praise, who said that Collins hits the “fastest balls I have ever played in a match.” The run resulted in Collins entering the top 10 ranking for the first time. She also became American No.1 as a result. She crashed out of the French Open and Wimbledon very early. However, she was fantastic again at the US Open. Collins bested Cristina Bucsa, Alize Cornet and stunned Naomi Osaka to make it to the round of 16.
Collins’ hyper-aggressive style has won her many fans. Her matches have always entertained and are slowly turning into wins more often. Danielle Collins will hope to have an even better 2023. Maybe knowing the rules better will help her even more!
