Gael Monfils forced out with an injury

Gael Monfils, the 35-year-old French professional returned from a three-month break and competed at the Canadian Open before the French professional rolled his ankle in a horror injury which forced him to retire from the event. Monfils was visibly distraught about being injured and was reduced to tears.

Ranked number 20 in the world, Monfils is the highest-ranked French player in the world and is widely regarded as one of the most entertaining players on the court. Winning 11 single ATP titles throughout the course of his career and being a runner-up 22 times, Monfils has had a relatively successful career.

Competing at the Canadian Open, Gael Monfils fought through two tough rounds before as he won against Pedro Martinez and Maxime Cressy to make his way in the round of 16 fixture where he faced Jack Draper, after winning the first set, Jack Draper looked in pole position to win the game and progress to the quarter-finals.

Before Gael Monfils had a chance to make a comeback in the match, he suffered a foot injury in the second set. It seemed like an aggravation of an injury that the Frenchman suffered earlier. Receiving a medical timeout, Monfils made a return but retired before making a play after discussing the injury with his courtside team.

The injury forced Monfils to retire and reduced him to tears due to the pain, Draper rushed to help Monfils out when he dropped on the court with his injury but to no avail, the 35-year-old was heartbroken that he was forced to withdraw from the match and the tournament.

After the game, Monfils took to Twitter to issue a statement regarding his injury, he said, “Hello! Tough one tonight in Montreal. The 1st exams that I have had are not great. I have decided to fly back to Europe to consult with my doctors. I will keep you updated as soon as possible. Thank you again for all your messages of support.
