Casper Ruud gets heckled by a fan during the match
The Norwegian came back from a breakdown at 4-5 in the third set, demonstrating his battling character by responding with great depth in important times to become the first player to win two Geneva titles since Stan Wawrinka in 2016 and 2017. After three hours and one minute, Casper Ruud fired 11 aces, hit with constant depth on his backhand, and smacked the ball with power and accuracy on his forehand to win his fourth match point. It was the first ATP Tour final of the season to go to a third-set tie-break, with Ruud’s victory lasting the most time and games of the season (36).
However, something strange happened in the match’s second set. During the tiebreaker in the second set, Ruud had the opportunity to serve. Two spectators hurled insults at Ruud and attempted to disrupt his game flow. As a result, his opponent, Joao Sousa, became enraged and made a heartfelt gesture by asking the umpire to remove the fans immediately, and the crowd eventually departed the stadium. Sousa did not win the championship, but his sensibility gained him the hearts of everyone.
