Third seed Jessica Pegula overcame the second-round hurdle of her Australian Open 2023 campaign. The American World No. 3 edged past Aliaksandra Sasnovich with ease and made her way to the third round. This win of Pegula is her second one over Belarusian in a Grand Slam in five months.

Earlier in September last year Pegula defeated Sasnovich in the second round of the US Open. She seemed content with her performance in the post-match conversation. But it was her applause to one of the fans present in the stand with the Buffalo Bills flag that caught everyone’s attention.

“I saw Buffalo Bill’s flag somewhere and I swear he doesn’t stop holding it. I don’t know how his arms are still okay,” Pegula praised the Buffalo Bills fan. Pegula wore a subtle symbol ‘3’ on her skirt and was asked about the significance of that. She revealed it was a tribute to the NFL star Damar Hamlin.

“One of the football players really has a tragic accident. I am just trying to show some support and kind of bridge Australia and Buffalo, New York which is strange, but kind of bridges these worlds together. He has recovered amazingly and it’s been awesome to see,” she explained citing the horrific accident of Hamlin early this month.

Buffalo resident Pegula has close personal ties to Hamlin and the Bills and has been paying her respect for the football star after the horrific accident.

Jessica Pegula loves the conditions of the Australian Open

Coming out of the United Cup win last week Jessica Pegula seemed very happy with her performance in the Australian Open as well. On the question about what is it in Australia that she loved very much, Pegula felt the conditions of Australia are one of the biggest advantages for her.

“My game really suits the conditions the courts are pretty fast the ball stays pretty low my hit is pretty flat so I like I get into the good rhythm and kind of hit my way through the court. So I think the conditions really suit my game well,” she explained.

Two-time Australian Open quarterfinalist Pegula is willing to go the extra mile this year.  “Going as far as possible this week is my main priority but it’s tough out there so I am taking one match at a time,” she expressed. Pegula will take the court again on Friday for her third-round clash with the opponent yet to be announced.
