World No. 68 Andy Murray and World No. 42 Alexander Bublik clashed in the round of 16 of the 2022 Stuttgart Open with the Brit coming on the top with a 6-3, 7-6(4) win to advance into the quarter-finals. After winning the first set rather comfortably, Murray found himself 2-5 down in the second set with a decider set looking inevitable. The Brit however brought out some fine disciplined shots to force a tiebreaker and won it to wrap the match in straight-sets.

However, ugly scenes during the final game of the first set overshadowed the Brit’s win. With Murray serving for the set, Bublik failed to return a ball hitting it wayward into the stands. Frustrated with it, he started abusing in Russian which wasn’t heard by the umpire or any officials as the Kazhakhistan’s player continued to abuse throughout the game. The abuses were however recorded in a camera and the player is believed to have said, “Is he going to make mistakes? no, then fuck you. I’m screwed, I fucked your mom (twice), I hate that shit.”

With Bublik escaping punishment, the video footage that has since gone viral has seen the player being criticised for his unsportsmanlike behaviour with horrible abuses directed not only towards the player but also his mother, Judy Murray. Further translation attempts were also made that are on similar lines that Bublik did indeed abuse Murray.

Murray however remained respectable in his comments towards Bublik after the match saying, “He is predictable in his unpredictability. You expect amazing shots and lost games. Today he did amazing things for five or six games in the second set, I was getting a little frustrated, but I kept fighting. I held a tough game at 2-5 and I think I played well until the end.”

With the win over Bublik, Murray will now take on World No. 5 and top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals of the tournament marking the second meeting between them and a fiery clash can be expected between the two after their meeting in the first round of the 2021 US Open where Murray had criticised Stefanos a lot for his elongated bathroom breaks.
