Iga Swiatek

Iga Swiatek survived a scare on 30th May, as she defeated a tricky teenager, Qinwen Zheng to enter the quarterfinals at the French Open 2022. It was a great pre-birthday present for the world number 1. Swiatek is currently on a 32-match winning streak, the third-highest in the open era, after Venus and Serena Williams. Iga has a tradition of serving bagels on her last match before her birthday, and she managed to follow the tradition this year too, defeating Zheng 6-7, 6-0, 6-2.

After the testing victory, the birthday was very eventful for Iga Swiatek. Last year, Marion Bartoli had sung ‘happy birthday’ to her and this year it was the trio of Mats Wilander, Alex Corretja, and John McEnroe. The former legends wished Iga Swiatek happy birthday and she also had many other surprises including one from the Roland-Garros tournament directors as well as from her sponsor Asics.

Iga Swiatek celebrated her birthday with Amelie Mauresmo, the French Open tournament director and she also received a skating cycle which she took for a spin after cutting the beautiful cake presented by the French Open organizers. She also received a customized cake from Asics to commemorate her 21st birthday.

Swiatek would not have been too keen on celebrating her birthday just yet. She has a tournament to win and though she also received her birthday present from her idol Rafael Nadal in the form of a thumping quarterfinal victory over Novak Djokovic, she would also be itching to get back on the court to get her second Grand Slam in Paris.
