WATCH: Iga Swiatek gears up for the hardcourt season as she eyes her 7th title of the season
Iga Swiatek
World No. 1 Iga Swiatek has been brilliant this season. Of the 10 events that she has played in this season, she has failed to reach the semi-finals of only two events. She was on a 37-match winning streak before she lost in the 3rd round of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships where she lost to Alize Cornet in straight-sets having turned up at the All-England Club without any Tour match on grass due to her shoulder injury.
Nevertheless, Swiatek has a 48-4 record for the season and with the hardcourt season returning, the Pole will be expected to be dominant once again as she was prior to the start of the Clay season. After her second-round defeat in Dubai, Iga won three straight WTA-1000 events in Qatar, Indian Wells and Miami with the title in Miami coming along with her crowning as the official World No. 1 and the Pole is currently on a 19-match unbeaten streak on the hardcourts.
Iga Swiatek yet to reach the quarter-finals at the US Open
Iga will return to action in the month of August during the US Open Leg series with her eyes on the 2022 US Open which could potentially be her third Grand Slam title with both of her previous titles coming at the French Open (2020 and 2022). In her 3 appearances so far at the US Open, Iga reached the 2nd round in 2019, the 3rd round in 2020 and the 4th round in 2021. With a change in surface and conditions, Iga has already hit the gyms to prepare herself for the hardcourt swing.
Prior to returning to the Tour, Iga will be playing in an exhibition match against compatriot and retired tennis Pro Agnieszka Radwanska with the match being officiated by Elina Svitolina, the bronze medallist at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The proceedings from the match will go towards organisations helping the rebuilding of Ukraine which remains under threat by the Russian attacks. With Swiatek being vocal about her support for Ukraine, she will be playing the match before she returns to the WTA Tour sporting the Ukrainian flag ribbon on her cap.
