WATCH: Iga Swiatek’s innocent mistake leaves the French Open crowd in splits

Iga Swiatek
World No. 1 Iga Swiatek moved into the semi-finals of the 2022 French Open by defeating Jessica Pegula 6-3, 6-2 in 1 hour and 29 minutes to make it to her second semis appearance at the Grand Slam in three years. Swiatek also picked up her 33rd consecutive victory with the win over Pegula with the American being on the receiving end twice during this majestic run of the Pole.
Iga remained in control of the match for the majority of the time as she finished the match with 4 aces, 0 double faults, 28 unforced errors, 30 winners and converted 5 of the 11 break points she had while also winning 9 of the 10 net points. Pegula from the other end of the court had 2 aces, 1 double fault, 27 unforced errors, 16 winners and managed just a solitary breakpoint from the 2 chances she had at her disposal while winning 3 of the 5 net points she went for.
One of the moments that stood out however came at the end of the match after her on-court interview when Iga was heading towards the locker room. What has now become a custom for the winning player to leave a message on the camera, Iga, having just celebrated her 21st birthday yesterday, intended to write something along those lines. However, she made a small mistake.
“Getting old but still fresh #22 31.05,” was what Iga wrote but as she was about to leave, she noticed that she had written her age wrong and corrected it quickly to ‘#21’ and said, “No wait, I forgot how old I am,” laughing on herself for not remembering her own age.
Iga Swiatek one win shy of matching Serena Williams’ record

With the win over Pegula being Swiatek’s 33rd win, she has now officially broken Justine Henin’s record of 32 consecutive wins set in 2007 and 2008. Swiatek is now just one win away from matching Serena Williams‘ record of 34 consecutive wins that she achieved in the 2013 season. The record for the 21st century is currently held by Venus Williams who won 35 consecutive matches in the 2002 season.
