Swiss maestro Roger Federer competed for the last time on Friday night at the Laver Cup in what will go down as one of the most emotional nights in tennis history. He partnered with his dear friend and arch-rival Rafael Nadal for only the second time in his career as the duo, who weren’t anywhere close to their 100% fitness, went down fighting in three sets 6-4,6-7,9-11 against Americans Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock.

Federer is probably the most loved tennis player in the history of the sport given the charisma he possesses. He has never shied away from expressing himself and is very emotional in nature. So it is very natural that he was emotional as soon as the match was over. He was seen in tears as he shook hands with his teammates on the courtside.

Even during the speech, he shed a few tears time and again, and was feeling difficult to speak as he choked past the tears. But when he addressed his family and spoke about his wife, he broke down and sobbed like a baby.

After the small ceremony, his family came to the court to embrace him. Teary-eyed, he embraced his wife Mirka, his parents, and his four kids. While holding back tears, he told his kids, “I’m so happy, I’m not sad, ok?” But the raw emotions on his face pained a different picture. While it was very wholesome to see Federer express his emotions, it was incredibly emotional and sad for the tennis world to see him cry.
