The 2023 Canadian Open has been hit with a latest controversy, following a sudden disturbance in the women’s semifinals. Jessica Pegula and Iga Swiatek were playing at the highest intensity in the second set before a sudden noise shook the American’s focus.
Jessica Pegula started the semifinal on the front foot, outplaying the top seed in the first set. The second set went down to the tire, as it was decided in the tiebreaker. The fourth seed was leading 4-3 in the tiebreaker when she lost her concentration. This eventually cost her the second set, as the match was forced into the final set.
Jessica Pegula was in control of the rally against the world number one, when music started playing from the crowd, whilst the rally was still going on. Iga Swiatek had just hit an overhead to barely stay in the rally, and the American had plenty of options to take a 5-3 lead in the tiebreaker.

The point was replayed, as Iga Swiatek managed to make the score four points all. From there on, it all went the top seed’s way, as Jessica Pegula could not even win one single point in the tiebreaker. The American seemed quite frustrated at the end of the second set, as she clearly looked on top before her lapse in concentration.
Jessica Pegula has been in top form at the Canadian Open this week. She got the better of her American compatriot Coco Gauff in three sets in the quarterfinals. She also managed to reach the semifinals of the Citi Open last week, as she continues to perform well on the faster hard courts.
Iga Swiatek has been handed a lifeline following the event during the semifinals of the 2023 Canadian Open. The Polish tennis player has not been at her best in the recent while, as she has struggled to get past her opponents in the opening rounds in Montreal. She will hope to get back to her best before her US Open title defense gets underway later this month.
