Novak Djokovic faced Holger Rune in the quarterfinal of the 2023 Paris Masters and it turned out to be a jam-packed thriller. The two players faced each other in the final of the previous edition of the tournament and thus it was already expected that it is going to be a heated match. A hostile crowd that constantly booed Novak Djokovic at every step just added to the excitement of this match.
It was by far been one of the most thrilling and exciting matches in the Paris Masters so far and fans were definitely not expecting this from Holger Rune. The Danish international has been suffering from poor form for a few months now but the way he performed against the World No. 1 tonight, it definitely feels like he is back.
There have been some extremely heated events throughout the match but none of them match the ferocious argument that took place between Novak Djokovic and the chair umpire during the second set over a particular decision of the umpire. After one of Holger’s shots went out, he raised his hand up to challenge Djokovic’s shot. The Serb and many other fans across the globe believed that it was too late to challenge the shot but the chair umpire entertained it.
This led to a very heated argument between the two parties as the Serb asked the chairperson to call the chairperson, to which he replied, “The supervisor can’t be called on that; it’s my judgment.” The crowd constantly booed Novak Djokovic during this entire process.
Novak Djokovic called the Paris crowd ‘Special’
Novak Djokovic has had a very contrasting experience with the Paris crowd so far at the 2023 Paris Masters. In his first match against Tomas Martin Etcheverry, the crowd was overall supportive and he even shared a special moment with them after going topless and flexing his muscles for them. However, they became particularly hostile towards the Serb from the second round onward, and that was continued in the quarterfinals.
However, the Serb definitely has no problem with that, as he thrives under hostility and boos. He loves proving his haters in the crowd wrong in real-time and we have seen countless examples of the same. In his round of 16 match against Tallon Griekspoor for example, he did not lose a single point after being booed when he double faulted on break point. “When I asked the audience to boo at me a little more, I won 8 points in a row. But I didn’t do anything to provoke the audience, that’s how it is. Is the Parisian crowd special? That’s a good word, they are special… very special,” Novak Djokovic said after his round of 16 match against Tallon Griekspoor.
