For the first time in history, Novak Djokovic now officially leads the race for most singles Grand Slam titles. The Serbian hero won his 23rd title at the 2023 French Open defeating Casper Ruud in the finals. Djokovic won the match 7-6(1), 6-3, 7-5 claiming his third title at Roland Garros.
Coming into the tournament, he was tied with Rafael Nadal at 22 Majors each. Nadal, the King of Clay for his 14 French Open titles in 18 years, had to sit out this year due to his hip injury. The injury forced surgery resulting in him missing the entire season. While the field was not entirely open for the Serb, he fought valiantly to achieve the historic feat.
Holding three championship points, Ruud defended one but that was all he could do. The Serb closed it out in the next game to win the title. He showed respect to Ruud before letting out his winning roar and rushing to his players’ box to celebrate with his family. As he came down from the box, he immediately brought out his sponsor Lacoste’s special gift to him.
On the occasion of winning his 23rd Major, Lacoste made a special jacket with a big 23 on the right side. Smiling wide, the Serb soaked it all in showing off his achievement deservingly.

Novak Djokovic’s illustrious trophy cabinet
With the win over Casper Ruud, Novak Djokovic has now won three titles at each of the four Grand Slam events. He is the only man to do so ever in history. His 10 titles in Australian Open are yet to be matched with the next best being Roger Federer who won six during his career. At the French Open, he is joint-third in the list with only Bjorn Borg (six titles) and Rafael Nadal (14 titles) ahead of him.
At Wimbledon, he is second only to Federer’s eight titles with seven of his own. A win at this year’s Championships will see him match his old rival and friend. At the US Open as well, in terms of titles won he is the third best. Although many other players have jointly won more. He is a three-time winner in New York trailing Pete Sampras, Jimmy Connors, and Federer on five titles each.
