World no. 1 Novak Djokovic returned to action this week after his historic title Down Under. The 35-year-old started right where he left. In the 2023 Dubai Tennis Championships, the Serb defeated Hubert Hurkacz to advance to the semifinals without any trouble.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion is already a five-time winner of the event as well. This time too, Djokovic is looking set to extend his record with a dominating run. And the local crowd was not behind either to shower their affection on Djokovic in the same manner.

In the last-four stage, Djokovic will lock horns with Russian Daniil Medvedev who defeated Borna Coric on the same evening. As the Serb’s winning streak goes, the Russian player will not pose much risk to Djokovic as well.

The Serbian tennis icon is definitely miles ahead of his rivals in the current season. The fortnight in Melbourne looked like a cakewalk for Djokovic despite an injury scare. Before that, the Adelaide International title proved to be just a warm-up for him.

Now, back in action after a gap, Djokovic is continuing the proceedings in the same manner. The 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev is his next opponent in the line. Djokovic holds a 9-4 lead over Medvedev and the encounter on Friday could very well prove to be an easy ride unless Medvedev ups his game and Djokovic fails to continue the momentum.

But as far as the Serb is considered, he is not willing to take the challenge lightly. Djokovic acknowledged Medvedev as one of the strongest opponents who needs fair treatment. “Daniil is one of the best players in the world in the last five years. Grand Slam winner. Former No. 1 in the world. Not much to talk about,” Djokovic said.

If the semifinal clash follows the script strictly, Djokovic will be very well on the path to winning his sixth title in the ATP 500 event. And for Djokovic, who just surpassed Steffi Graf in the list of most weeks at the top of the rankings, a title will be a great way to mark the milestone.
