Novak Djokovic, the world number one, won the Italian Open on Sunday, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-0 7-6(5) for his first championship in over six months. Djokovic did not drop a set on his way to the final in Rome, having won his 1,000th tour-level match by defeating Casper Ruud in the semi-final to set up a meeting with Tsitsipas, who he defeated in the French Open final last year.

It has been the perfect week for the 34-year-old, who became only the fifth man in the Open Era to reach the 1,000 wins milestone after Jimmy Connors, Roger Federer, Ivan Lendl and Rafa Nadal, ahead of the start of the French Open next Sunday.

With the trophy in hand, the Serb broke into song during his victory speech, garnering shouts from the audience. The recently finished Eurovision Song Contest drew worldwide attention and interest, notably from the World No. 1. Eurovision is an international songwriting competition hosted by the European Broadcasting Union, in which many European countries compete.

All week, Djokovic has been watching the tournament and, in particular, his home team Serbia. Shortly after his semi-final victory over Casper Ruud on Saturday, he moved to social media to express his support for the Serbian squad at Eurovision 2022. While enjoying the music and performances on the show, he urged his supporters and fellow countrymen to vote for Serbia. Following a concentrated performance in the Italian Open final, the Serb surprised spectators by singing on the court.

He seemed ecstatic after the match, which is understandable given that he had won his first championship of the season. The triumph comes at an ideal time for Novak Djokovic, who will begin his quest for a record-tying 21st Major at the French Open next Sunday.
