At the 2023 Monte Carlo Masters, Novak Djokovic won his first clay court match of the season. Despite a challenging first set, the top-ranked player in the world defeated his opponent Ivan Gakhov, who had to qualify for the tournament, in two sets, 7-6 (7/5), 6-2 in an hour and 48 minutes.
After reaching the semifinals at the Dubai Tennis Championships, Novak Djokovic’s match at the Monte Carlo Masters was his first in over a month. He had to skip the Sunshine Double in Indian Wells and Miami in March due to his unvaccinated status.
Djokovic, who has previously won the Monte Carlo Masters twice, lives in Monaco. He was accompanied by his family, including his wife, son Stefan, and daughter Tara, who cheered him on from his player’s box, providing him with the necessary support and affection for his competitive comeback.
Novak Djokovic’s daughter, five-year-old Tara, was thrilled to watch her father play and her enthusiastic reactions were entertaining for the viewers. When Djokovic won the match, Tara imitated her father’s victory celebration, which was endearing to witness. The tennis superstar has won 22 Grand Slam titles.

Novak Djokovic triumphs in the first match at Monte Carlo Masters
In his first match since February, Novak Djokovic faced a challenging opponent in qualifier Ivan Gakhov but managed to come out on top with a 7-6 (7/5), 6-2 win after an hour and 47 minutes of play. Formula One driver George Russell was in the stands to witness Djokovic’s triumph, which marked his first win in Monte Carlo since 2021.
Novak Djokovic had not played a match in more than a month due to his unvaccinated status, which prevented him from entering the USA. In his first match on return, he faced an unfamiliar opponent in Ivan Gakhov, who is ranked 198th in the world and only made it to the Monte Carlo qualifying event due to four withdrawals on Friday.
The 26-year-old tennis player, Ivan Gakhov, had previously expressed his enthusiasm on playing against Novak Djokovic, who he refers to as the “GOAT” (Greatest of All Time). He told the ATP that the opportunity to play against Djokovic was the best reward he could ask for, regardless of points or monetary gain.
