In a move that backfired horribly in no time, Santander Spain used an AI model of their brand ambassador Rafael Nadal, in one of their latest advertisements. The Spanish ace, who is hands down one of the most prominent figures of the nation and one of the biggest tennis stars of all time looks nothing like this AI model. This campaign thus resulted in the tennis meme community immediately getting on its tail and heavily trolling Santander on social media.

The intention behind this campaign is unclear because if it was to get negative PR, they have done a sensational job. The need to use AI to show their main ambassador, who is a person of so much popularity, has provoked a number of fans. However, the fact that the 22-time Grand Slam champion is not in Spain right now, might be the reason behind this AI advertisement.

Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal has already traveled to Los Angeles in order to prepare for the upcoming 2024 Indian Wells, where he will be making his much-awaited comeback. He suffered a muscle issue in the 2023 Brisbane International and missed the 2024 Australian Open for the same reason. He was about to participate in the Doha Open but had failed to recover by then.

Coincidentally, Rafael Nadal met Novak Djokovic in the business class of his flight to Los Angeles, the Serb shared a picture of both of them on his Instagram account and let their fans know they are traveling together. Djokovic will also be making his return to Indian Wells after not playing in the tournament for the last five years.

Fans troll Santander for using an AI version of Rafael Nadal in their advertisement

However, a particular fan claimed that it was a con-advert and that is why it looked so terrible.

This is a con advert! …with the wrong language as well. Cantabrians don’t use gallego language. The pic looks terrible too
